Virtual grossing, drawn by hand

The Specimen Studio

The Art of Science

Precise pathology, taught through art. Interactive 3D specimens you can see from every angle, with every step of the gross: orient, ink, section, sample.

What it is

Every angle. Every step.

Grossing is spatial, so learning it shouldn't be flat. The Specimen Studio turns each specimen into an interactive 3D model: spin it, ink the margins, slice it, and follow every cassette back to its source, right on your screen.

Core program

Virtual Grossing Program

Interactive 3D specimens you rotate, zoom and step through, like building instructions for a model kit. Each tap adds the next layer of the workup.

See the case, not just the description

A 3D diagram that links every finding to its cassette, made for the pathologist, the PA, and everyone in between.

Who it's for

Built for the people at the bench

Pathology residents

Walk into your first grossing rotation already picturing the specimen.

PA students & programs

Visual, case-based lessons that fit alongside your coursework and clinical rotations.

Practicing PAs

Refresh rare specimens and sharpen how you document complex cases.

Laboratories

Consistent onboarding, and case diagrams that make the gross description clear to everyone downstream.

Try the breast excision demo

A lumpectomy with two lesions and two clips. Spin it, ink the six margins, slice it serially and see where every cassette comes from. It runs in your browser, on a computer, iPad or phone.

Early prototype: the final models will be sculpted by hand.

How it's different

Drawn by someone who grosses

  • Illustrated by a practicing pathologists' assistant. Every model and diagram is drawn by hand by someone who does this work, so the details are right.
  • Step through it in 3D. No more guessing from a flat photo. You see orientation, ink and section planes from every angle.
  • Case diagrams, not just descriptions. Lessons end in a map linking each lesion, clip and margin to its cassette, the habit that prevents errors.
  • Original, case-based teaching. Written from scratch around realistic cases, not repackaged textbook pages.

About

Hi, I'm Laura

I'm a pathologists' assistant and medical illustrator. At the bench I saw how hard it is to learn grossing from words alone: how a specimen sits, where the margins are, and how one slice relates to the next. So I started drawing it.

The Specimen Studio brings those two halves of my work together: the precision of pathology and the clarity of art. Every lesson is something I wish I'd had when I was learning.
